It is indicated that in cross-sectional analysis there is higher prevalence of H. pylori seropositivity in COPD than in non-COPD patients, as well as that H.pylori infection has not significant impact on lung function in COPd patients.

There was no association between H. pylori exposure and either chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), measures of allergic disease or decline in lung function, and this association was not independent of height or socio-economic status.

There was a 30% reduction in the prevalence of all three atopic disorders in people who had active H. pylori infection, although for each individual atopic disorder the numbers were not quite large enough to reach statistical significance.

The present review summarizes the current literature, including the own studies, concerning the association between H. pylori infection and respiratory diseases and concludes that larger studies should be undertaken to confirm the observed results and to clarify the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms.

Both systemic and mucosal administrations of HP-NAP are successful in reducing eosinophilia, immunoglobulin E and systemic Th2 cytokines at the bronchial level, and identify H. pylori as a candidate for novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases.
